Scientific Name | Leucadendron elimense E.Phillips subsp. nov. (Protea Atlas: AGRY206712 NBG) |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | PROTEACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2020/06/09 |
Assessor(s) | A.G. Rebelo, D. Raimondo & L. von Staden |
Justification | This taxon has a restricted range with an extent of occurrence (EOO) and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 12 km². It is known from two locations and is declining due to too frequent fires and competition with invasive alien plants. It therefore qualifies as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | It is known from the foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountains near the town of Greyton in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Greyton Shale Fynbos |
Description | It is confined to wet shales, on the upper south slopes in Greyton Shale Fynbos. Mature individuals are killed by fires, and only seeds survive. Seeds are released after ripening, and is stored in surface leaf-litter. It is dioecious, with insect-pollinated male and female flowers occurring on separate plants. |
Threats |
This taxon has lost 14% of its habitat to crop cultivation (cereals) there is ongoing degradation of its habitat as a result of invasive alien plant species (wattles, hakea and pines) and too frequent fire. Regular ignitions occur due to the population being close to the town of Genadendal. |
Population |
A population of between 500 and 1000 plants occurs scattered along a 8 km stretch of lowland foothills. There are two subpopulations known from two locations, one that occurs on the south side of Simonskop and a second on the south east slopes of Bakenskop. There is likely ongoing decline to the population taking place as a result of too frequent fire and habitat loss to invasive alien plants.
