Justification
Lachenalia lactosa is a range restricted species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 450 km². It is known from six to seven locations, and is declining due to ongoing habitat loss and competition from alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to a small area in the Western Cape, where it occurs from Kleinmond and Bot River to Elim.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Elim Ferricrete Fynbos, Hangklip Sand Fynbos, Overberg Sandstone Fynbos, Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs on sandy coastal flats or gentle slopes in fynbos.
Threats
Around Kleinmond, this species is threatened by urban expansion. Two subpopulations have been recorded on the urban edge. In the Bot River Valley, it has lost habitat to agriculture, and habitat loss continues due to development of housing estates. A subpopulation recorded in the 1960s on the road between Baardskeerdersbos and Elim is now possibly locally extinct due to habitat loss to expanding crop fields. It is also threatened by competition from alien invasive plants across its range.
Population

Plants occur singly or in small clumps, and are declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
