Justification
Lachenalia ventricosa is a rare and poorly known species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1334 km². It is known from fewer than 10 locations, and is declining due to ongoing habitat loss to agricultural expansion.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape, Western Cape
Range
This species occurs from the Nardous Mountain and northern Cederberg to the Biedouw Valley, and southwards to the Swartruggens Mountains bordering the Tanqua Karoo.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartruggens Quartzite Karoo, Nardouw Sandstone Fynbos, Swartruggens Quartzite Fynbos, Cederberg Sandstone Fynbos, Graafwater Sandstone Fynbos, Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs in deep white sandy soils on mountain plateaux.
Threats
It is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to rooibos tea cultivation on the Nardous Mountains (Duncan 2012). In the Olifants River Valley it is also threatened by habitat loss to fruit orchards.
Population

Lachenalia ventricosa is a rare and poorly known species, and was last observed in 2007 in the Swartruggens area. Historical collections are old and without precise locality descriptions, making an estimate of the number of locations difficult. There are likely to be at least five, but the exact number is not known. Field surveys are urgently needed to gain a better understanding of the size and structure of the population. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss.
