Justification | This species has at least 30 locations that continue to decline due to ongoing habitat degradation from alien invasive plants. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 14 105 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 200 km². It is therefore listed as Near Threatened under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Western Cape Province, where it occurs from the Cape Flats to Clanwilliam. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Citrusdal Vygieveld, Cape Flats Dune Strandveld, Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Swartland Granite Renosterveld, Swartland Silcrete Renosterveld, Cederberg Sandstone Fynbos, Olifants Sandstone Fynbos, Peninsula Granite Fynbos, Boland Granite Fynbos, Atlantis Sand Fynbos, Swartland Alluvium Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on rocky or sandy flats and lower slopes in the winter rainfall zone. |
Threats |
Alien invasive plants threaten the subpopulations in the southernmost part of the range around Riebeek Kasteel, Malmesbury, Stellenbosch, and Bellville. Agriculture has probably led to the decline of populations throughout its range. Urban expansion has also led to past declines in and around Cape Town. |
Population |
The population size is unknown, but plants remain in small fragments, particularly in the southernmost part of the range and in areas where crop cultivation takes place, so a continuing decline is inferred.

Population trend | Decreasing |
