Scientific Name | Oedera longipes (K.Bremer) N.G.Bergh |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
Synonyms | Comborhiza longipes (K.Bremer) Anderb. & K.Bremer, Leysera longipes K.Bremer |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2014/11/12 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & N.A. Helme |
Justification | This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 550 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of less than 200 km². Plants at two known locations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and competition from unmanaged alien invasive plants. It is therefore assessed as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | It is distributed from the Groot Winterhoek to Hex River Mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Breede Shale Fynbos |
Description | Plants grow on lower south-facing shale slopes, 600-900 m. |
Threats |
Subpopulations at both known locations are threatened by ongoing habitat loss to expanding orchards. Unmanaged alien invasive plants are also present at one location. This species' habitat, Breede Shale Fynbos, which has a total extent of 300 km², is already at least 30% irreversibly modified, predominantly due to agricultural expansion, and loss continues. |
Population |
This species is a rare habitat specialist, and is known from only two locations. It is however possibly overlooked and may still be found in similar habitat between Tulbagh and Worcester.
