Justification | This taxon has a restricted distribution in Ladismith district in the Western Cape, with an extent of occurrence of 3794 km² and an area of occupancy of 12 km². One of three known subpopulations has recently been lost, and at the remaining two locations, subpopulations continue to decline due to heavy grazing. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion B. |

Threats |
This taxon disappeared in the last two years from one of the three known sites. It was on a road verge and it is not known what destroyed the plants. During the field survey, there were no signs of dead stems or any other serious disturbance like bull dozing.
At one subpopulation plants have been observed to occur only along the fenced reserve, with no plants within the adjacent grazed camp. From observation from the other subpopulation, it is evidently clear that plants are highly palatable to livestock and game. All these observations indicate that the known subpopulations have been severely reduced due to heavy grazing. |
Population |
Previously known from only three subpopulations, one subpopulation has gone extinct in the past three years, with the causes of decline unknown. The population trend is declining due to both the recently reported loss of a subpopulation as well as to heavy grazing which impacts the two remaining subpopulations. Monitoring is required.
