Justification | A rare species that occur in disjunct forest patches across South Africa. It has a specialised habitat, with an area of occupancy (AOO) of 76 km² and it is known from 20 locations. The population is declining due to illegal collection, and a reduction of 25% is suspected to have taken place in the past 30-60 years (generation length 10-20 years). It therefore nearly meets the criteria thresholds for Vulnerable under criterion A and B and is listed as Near Threatened. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Western Cape |

Threats |
It is impacted throughout its range due to harvesting by orchid collectors, the large size of its flowers make it desirable for collecting. |
Population |
This species is rare but may be locally common in cool moist forests. The subpopulations are disjunct in their distribution, and very few recent records exist for this species. The population is suspected to be declining due to harvesting by orchids collectors, a decline of approximately 25% of the population is likely to have occurred over the past three generations 30 - 60 years.
