A rare, range-restricted species (EOO 1421 km²), estimated to occur at between 10 and 20 locations, and declining due to competition from alien invasive plants.

Threats
This species is threatened in places by competition from alien invasive plants. It has lost habitat to wood harvesting in indigenous forests and timber plantations in the past (about 18% of the historical extent of its habitat has been lost), but remaining forests are now protected, and habitat loss has ceased.
