Scientific Name | Schoenus quartziticus T.L.Elliott & Muasya |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | CYPERACEAE |
Common Names | Quartz Veldrush (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2021/07/26 |
Assessor(s) | H. Mtshali |
Justification | A Western Cape endemic with a very limited range, extent of occurrence (EOO) of 28 km², which is known from only three locations. It continues to decline due to ongoing habitat degradation and from competition from alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species has a very limited distribution, being found on the Agulhas Plain, South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld |
Description | It is endemic to quartz patches on shale-derived soils. |
Threats |
About 75% of this species' habitat is irreversibly transformed, predominantly due to loss to agricultural crop cultivation. The loss is largely historical, with very low levels of ongoing loss recorded in recent years (1% loss between 1990 and 2014). Plants occur in small remnants of natural vegetation and are currently experiencing ongoing decline as a result of the spread of invasive alien plants. |
Population |
No population data are available; however, population decline is inferred from ongoing degradation of habitat by alien invasive plants.
|
Population trend | Decreasing |
