Scientific Name | Erica accommodata Klotzsch ex Benth. var. subviscidula Bolus |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2022/11/30 |
Assessor(s) | R.C. Turner & F. Munro |
Justification | A habitat specialist with a naturally disjunct distribution and an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 116 km². The only recorded subpopulations in the past 40 years occur on the Riviersonderend Mountains but there may be outliers from the Hex River and Kammanassie Mountains since the species was historically recorded in these mountains. There are fewer than five extant locations and invasive vegetation is causing ongoing decline in habitat quality. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species occurs on the Riviersonderend Mountains in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It grows on steep, upper, south-facing slopes and summit ridges on damp, peaty rock ledges. |
Threats |
Alien invasive vegetation (Pinus pinaster) is present on lower slopes across this species range as well as on some of the top ridges. Climate change may have effects on this high altitude species, but not as immediate as the invasive vegetation. |
Population |
The current state of the population is unknown, but it is suspected to be declining due to the significant spread of invasive species within its range over the past 10 years. There may be a possibility that the historically recorded Kammanassie and Hex River subpopulations are extinct since there have been no observations of this species at either locality for more than 60 years. The subpopulation in the Riviersonderend Mountains was last observed in 2004.
|
Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
It is conserved in the Riviersonderend State Forest. |
