Scientific Name | Erica petricola E.G.H.Oliv. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
Synonyms | Philippia petrophila E.G.H.Oliv., not Erica petrophila L.Bolus |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened D2 |
Assessment Date | 2023/11/22 |
Assessor(s) | R.C. Turner & H. Mtshali |
Justification | A range-restricted habitat specialist with an area of occupancy (AOO) of 20 km². It is known from three locations, and is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants which are already present in low densities in some parts of its range. Should these invasives spread directly in the areas where this species' subpopulations occur, it would qualify for Endangered under criterion B. Given that this threat is currently still potential it qualifies for listing a Near Threatened under criterion D2. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is restricted to the Riviersonderend Mountains in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, North Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It grows in rock crevices or rocky slopes at middle to high altitude. |
Threats |
Despite the existence of timber plantations and escaped pines on the lower southern slopes of Riviersonderend mountain, as well as widely dispersed invasive plants on the northern slopes, this species is found on middle to high slopes which have a relatively low density in invasive alien plants. The habitat also protects it from fires. Subpopulations are potentially vulnerable to future competition from alien invasive plants. |
Population |
Not much is known about this species' population, however it is not suspected to be declining.
