Scientific Name | Syringodea flanaganii Baker |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2014/09/23 |
Assessor(s) | M.M.P. Mogale & L. von Staden |
Justification | A relatively widespread (EOO 10 293 km²), but rarely recorded species known from fewer than 10 locations and declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | Port Elizabeth to Komga and Cathcart. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Bhisho Thornveld, Amathole Montane Grassland, Motherwell Karroid Thicket, Bethelsdorp Bontveld |
Description | Stony flats and slopes. |
Threats |
Threatened by ongoing habitat loss to urban expansion around Port Elizabeth, where it was last recorded in 1933, and is now possibly locally extinct. Recent field observations from the Stutterheim-Cathcart area indicate that the species is threatened by habitat degradation due to overgrazing. |
Population |
S. flanaganii is rarely collected and poorly known. It is difficult to distinguish from S. bicolor and S. longituba, and may be misidentified and overlooked. It is known from only a few, rather disjunct records scattered over a wide area, but it occurs in a botanically poorly explored area and field surveys may reveal it to be more common than records suggest.
