Justification
This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 37 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 12 km². It is known from three severely fragmented subpopulations which continue to decline due to ongoing habitat degradation due to lack of fire and alien plant invasion. Subpopulations are small with fewer than 50 mature individuals in each and the overall population is suspected to be less than 250 mature individuals. It is therefore listed as Critically Endangered under criterion B and C.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
It is endemic to Western Cape province of South Africa, and is restricted to the lower eastern slopes and foot of the Piketberg.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Piketberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs in well-drained, stony clay lower slopes, in renosterveld or renosterveld-fynbos transitions, flowering best after fire.
Threats
This species has lost 70% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS). The flats below the eastern slopes of Piketberg are extensively cultivated, but there has not been much agricultural expansion on the slopes. Recently however, vineyards are being planted up the slopes. The lower slopes are not being burnt and the vegetation is generally very old and senescent, and alien plants are starting to invade.
Population

The population has a decreasing trend and is known from only three subpopulations. There are population size estimates for two and both have fewer than 50 plants. The overall population is projected to be fewer than 250 individuals.
