Scientific Name | Geissorhiza splendidissima Diels |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
Common Names | Bokkeveld Pride (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Rare |
Assessment Date | 2023/06/17 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo, E. Marinus & S. Todd |
Justification | This is a highly localized species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 257 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 88 km². It has lost habitat to wheat cultivation in the past however a focus on building awareness of the biodiversity value of its habitat means that no ploughing has taken place for over 20 years. It is therefore listed as Least Concern under the IUCN 3.1. criteria, but is nationally categorised as Rare. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | An endemic to the Western Cape province, South Africa, that is restricted to the Bokkeveld Mountains and western Bokkeveld Plateau in Nieuwoudtville. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Nieuwoudtville Shale Renosterveld, Nieuwoudtville-Roggeveld Dolerite Renosterveld |
Description | It occurs on sandy to stony flats, mainly on tillite derived soils; flowering well only when the surrounding vegetation has been cleared or disturbed. |
Threats |
This species has lost 36% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS). Expanding crop cultivation was a significant threat in the past, however, it has now ceased. Future agricultural expansion remains a slight potential threat, particularly when privately owned land changes ownership, however the significant biodiversity value of renosterveld remnants on the Bokkeveld Escarpment is now well recognised so ploughing is highly unlikely. Much of this species' remaining habitat fragments are grazed, but grazing does not appear to negatively impact the population. |
Population |
The population has a stable trend and is known from fifteen subpopulations. Subpopulations can be large with over 1000 mature individuals in each.
