Justification
This subspecies has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2441 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 76 km². It is known from between 10 and 12 locations. The sandy soils in which it grows are a prime target for Rooibos tea cultivation, which is causing ongoing decline to this subspecies' habitat. It is therefore listed as Near Threatened under criteria B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape, Western Cape
Range
This subspecies is endemic to South Africa, occurring from the Bokkeveld Mountains in the Northern Cape to the Gifberg-Matsikamma Mountains in the Western Cape.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Nardouw Sandstone Fynbos, Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs on rocky sandstone slopes, in deep sands and sandstone pavements.
Threats
This subspecies has lost 16% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS). The Nardousberge and the Moedveloor road from Nieuwoudtville are highly threatened by Rooibos tea expansion - the sandy soils in which this plant grows are a prime target for tea lands. There is also severe habitat degradation due to livestock overgrazing and trampling occurring in parts of its range e.g. the Bieudouw Valley.
Population

It is known from between 10 and 12 subpopulations. In 2009, it was only known from four subpopulations but extensive efforts by citizen scientists have found many new records of this species. The population is declining as a result of ongoing loss of habitat for crop cultivation.
