Scientific Name | Aristea rigidifolia G.J.Lewis |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2022/06/10 |
Assessor(s) | P. Goldblatt, K. Naidoo & H. Mtshali |
Justification | This poorly known species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 317 km² and has been recorded from five herbarium collections. Most of the collections are old and It was last recorded 25 years ago. Between three and five locations are likely extant. It is suspected to be declining as a result of coastal development and degradation of habitat due to alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This local endemic occurs from the southern Cape Peninsula to Klein River mountains in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, Overberg Sandstone Fynbos, Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in seeps and marshes on sandy flats and slopes. This species only flowers after fire. |
Threats |
A major threat to this species, particularly on sand flats is coastal development. As Aristea rigidifolia is dependent on wetlands, it may be at particular risk of habitat degradation. Alien invasive plants are present in all parts of this species range and are causing ongoing habitat degradation and drying up of wetlands. |
Population |
There is no data on population size or trend for this species. It is noted to be frequent in marshes after fire according to William #3717 collection made in 1986. It is known from a few herbarium collections made between 1932 and 1996. This species is suspected to be declining due to habitat loss to urban and coastal development and alien plant infestation. Field surveys are required.
