National Status
Status and Criteria
Near Threatened B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
This species has a restricted distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 6 881 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 232 km². It is still fairly common, occurring at many more than 10 locations, but a continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habit degradation due to the spread of alien invasive plants. Therefore it nearly meets the criteria thresholds for Vulnerable under criterion B and is listed as Near Threatened.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is restricted to southern Western Cape province of South Africa, where it occurs from the Hottentots Holland Mountains to Bredasdorp.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Overberg Sandstone Fynbos, Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It grows on stony sandstone slopes and flats.
Threats
About 40% of this species' habitat is already irreversibly modified, predominantly due to habitat loss from coastal development and agricultural expansion. No significant ongoing habitat loss was recorded since 1990, but ongoing degradation of habitat due to infrequent fires and alien plant invasion continues.
Population

Although this species has lost its habitat on the flats due to agriculture expansion and coastal development, it still persists on the sandstone slopes. The population trend is not known, but it is suspected to be declining.
