Justification | This taxon has a small distribution and is restricted to the Strandveld region of the Western Cape Province. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 768-1 018 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 92-100 - 100 km². It is known from 10 locations that continue to decline due to agriculture expansion, coastal and industrial development, and mining. There has been a 10% reduction in the population due to housing developments at Jacobsbaai and development around the iron-ore terminal in Saldanha. It therefore qualifies for Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This taxon has a restricted distribution in the Western Cape, where it occurs from Vredenburg to Saldanha to Yzerfontein. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Langebaan Dune Strandveld, Saldanha Limestone Strandveld, Saldanha Flats Strandveld, Saldanha Granite Strandveld |
Description | It is confined to strandveld on calcrete. |
Threats |
This species' habitat in the Strandveld has been fragmented through extensive loss to agriculture, coastal urban and industrial expansion, and mining. About 38% of its habitat is irreversibly modified, and loss continues due to mining, agriculture, and the invasion of habitat by alien plants.
The observed loss at Jacobsbaai and iron-ore terminal Saldanha is estimated at 10% over the last ten years. |
Population |
It is common in limestone strandveld, with 12 subpopulations known, the largest consisting of more than 1 000 mature individuals. A few of these are isolated and small in size. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
