Shallow grit pans on gneiss, often sheltered beneath small rocks.
Threats
Sought after by collectors but the wide and scattered distribution of subpopulations minimises the risk of extinction. The population of this taxon is however declining as a result of collecting.
Population

This taxon is less common than subsp. depressum, and has a more restricted range. It is also less cryptic than subsp. depressum, but still likely to be overlooked and more common than records suggest. The population size is difficult to estimate, but is likely to exceed 1000 plants. It is declining due to illegal harvesting.
