Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Major habitats
Platbakkies Succulent Shrubland
Shaded west-facing cliff faces, occurring on dark rocks of unknown geology, possibly containing iron.
This rare species is threatened by illegal succulent collection. The combination of a single site for the small population and the ongoing and growing demand for mature plants means loss is ongoing and if current trends continue this species is at high risk of extinction. There is also increasing mining pressure across Namaqualand, and the unusual substrate on which this species occurs may be targeted for mining.

This species is extremely rare, and is currently known from a single, small population of about 300 mature individuals. It occupies a unique geological formation, and is likely to be a localized habitat specialist. Surveys by several botanists of immediate area have so far failed to yield any additional subpopulations.
