Scientific Name | Selago persimilis Hilliard |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | SCROPHULARIACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Insufficient Information |
Assessment Date | 2018/05/14 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | A relatively widespread (EOO 18 802 km²), but very poorly known species last recorded in 1935. The reason for the lack of records is not known, it may be rare and overlooked, or possibly threatened by overgrazing. Field surveys are needed to relocate it in the wild. Based on currently available data, its risk of extinction cannot be assessed. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape, Northern Cape |
Range | Eastern Karoo, from Britstown to Burgersdorp, and southwards to Cradock. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Eastern Upper Karoo |
Description | Karroid shrubland, possibly restricted to koppies. |
Threats |
Unknown. The fact that this species was last recorded in 1935 is concerning. J.P.H. Acocks surveyed 172 plots within its known distribution range in the 1950s and 60s, and did not record it once. It may be affected by overgrazing, but field surveys are needed to confirm this. |
Population |
A very poorly known species, known from only five collections and last recorded in 1935. It is suspected to be rare, as it has not been recorded in numerous vegetation surveys within its known range. The population trend is unknown.
