Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Manulea minor Diels
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
SCROPHULARIACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct)
Assessment Date
2018/05/10
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
A highly range-restricted species (EOO 7 km²) that was last recorded in 1944. Most of the natural vegetation within its known range has been irreversibly modified, and it is not known whether the population has survived.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Hex River Valley.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Breede Alluvium Fynbos
Description
Sandy flats and lower slopes.
Threats
The specific habitat requirements of this species is not well known, but altitude notes on specimens suggest that it occurs on lower slopes and flats. These areas within the Hex River Valley has been extensively converted to vineyards, as well as lost to urban expansion around De Doorns. It is an annual species that is possibly resilient to disturbance, but the 70+ years since it was last recorded is a cause for concern.
Population

This species was last recorded in 1944 near Orchard siding in the Hex River Valley. Current status and trend of the population is not known, and searches are urgently needed to relocate this species in the wild.
